Ryan's Bike
Ryan loves bikes – it’s all he ever thinks about. Ryan also has Cerebral Palsy and will never be able to ride a bike of his own.
One of Ryan’s favorite things to do is watch his older sister, Megan, ride her bike. Megan knows that, deep down, Ryan wishes he could be the one riding. Megan finds a special bike made just for people like Ryan, but her family cannot afford to buy one. Instead, Megan is left to entertain her brother with stunts that she can do on her bike - that is, until the day she breaks her arm while attempting a new trick.
Ryan is heartbroken that Megan can’t ride her bike, but becomes devastated when he learns that she’s afraid to get back on it! With Ryan’s support and encouragement (and a special surprise for Ryan), Megan is able to overcome her fear and, together, they learn never to give up on their dreams.

MORE ABOUT RYAN'S BIKE...
Ryan's Bike is an inspiring story for kids with physical disabilities and their families. The main character, Ryan, has Cerebral Palsy and while, through the story, the reader experiences life through Ryan's eyes, the story is not about Ryan's disability. Instead, the story is about Ryan's relationship with his sister, Megan, and how they are able to help each other overcome fears, adversity and unexpected challenges. What makes Ryan's Bike special is that, through a plot with which any kid can relate, the story offers a primary character with whom specifically children with disabilities can relate. My goal was to encourage readers to view Ryan not as a boy with a disability, but a boy who, despite his disability, is still able to achieve a dream and become a hero to his sister.
Ryan's Bike present real life issues that can arise in any family. It just so happens that the main character has a little more to overcome than the average kid. It is through Ryan's love for his sister and his love of bikes that he finds the courage and motivation to achieve his goals and, in the end, inspires his sister to not give up on hers. I hope Ryan's character will encourage children (especially those with a disability) to work hard to pursue a dream, no matter how impossible that dream may seem.
